I am a cautious academic still employed. So, I need to not overstate things. This means I will try to comment on what's happening in the K-16 sector where I have some expertise.

Currently, the NZ Ministry of Education has been gutted, along with 1000s more civil servants across the nation. Yet the expectation seems to be that with a new emphasis on structured literacy and structured mathematics, teachers will be able to grasp this nettle without much training or support. The idea of moving toward structured instruction is a good one, in my view; but, don't expect rapid success.
